Why I’m Running

I have seen seen how the criminal justice system can fail us. I will bring an independent voice to the Court of Criminal Appeals to ensure that cases receive a fair and thorough review. I am passionate about upholding the Constitution and the Rule of Law, and treating everyone with dignity and humanity.

I have over 25 years in the criminal justice field. I am now a criminal defense attorney, but I spent over 17 years as a prosecutor at the Travis County District Attorney's Office, working to protect victims and keep my community safe.

I took on government corruption and white collar crime as the Director of the Public Integrity and Complex Crimes Division. I prosecuted violent crimes, including murder, sexual assault, and child abuse.

But over the last five years, I also worked with the Conviction Integrity Unit, investigating wrongful conviction claims through methods like DNA testing, witness interviews, and scientific expert review. I was shocked and dismayed to discover wrongful convictions in my county, and to further learn that a few of the cases I prosecuted years ago were, in fact, wrongful convictions. Though I worked hard to ensure that justice was done in those cases, I saw firsthand the cracks in the foundation of our criminal justice system. I have a deeper understanding of the ways the system can fail us and the courage that is needed to fix it.

The Court of Criminal Appeals sits at the top of the criminal justice system in Texas. It considers critical constitutional questions that impact Texans' rights and freedoms; it writes rules that apply to Texas courts; and it is the ultimate factfinder in wrongful conviction cases. This is why I am passionate about bringing an independent voice to the court to ensure that its important cases and issues receive a fair and thorough review, decisions are grounded in the Constitution and the Rule of Law, and everyone is treated with dignity and humanity.
